Sandwell, now in her nineties, remembers something of her years in Rio―and relives a time in the late 1930s when she had moved from Winnipeg (“the Chicago of the north”) to Chicago itself, had tried to make a name for herself as an artist, and had found the world seeming to conspire against her. Robin relives again and again a tragic twist of fortune that cannot be changed. In the end, the story converges on the Art Institute of Chicago, where the child makes an extraordinary attempt to reverse another twist of fortune―one that befell K.P. more than sixty years earlier. About the Author
Don LePan has spent most of his adult life working as a book publisher; he is the founder of the academic publishing house Broadview Press. His non-fiction books include a study of Shakespeare s plots and a glossary of literary terms; his first work of fiction, Animals: A Novel (2009), has been described by J.M. Coetzee as a powerful piece of writing and a disturbing call to conscience.
Born in Washington, DC and raised in Ontario, LePan spent many years as a resident of Calgary, and has lived for briefer periods in Lewes, England; Murewa, Zimbabwe; and New Orleans, Louisiana. Since 2009 his home has been Nanaimo, British Columbia.

with great depictions of Chicago as seen through the eyes of ...

The end of the first chapter was a punch to the gut, and I was completely hooked from that point. The novel starts out introspective and dreamy, with great depictions of Chicago as seen through the eyes of a child. But just when you're lulled into the hint of magic and the memories of other places in other times, LePan throws in a twist---an earthquake in Chicago that is presented with terrifying realism.
I won't spoil the rest, but would definitely recommend trying this book if you like literary fiction, magical realism, or are a fan of Chicago architecture--the author clearly knows the city! The prose is gorgeous and the twists are fantastic.

Don LePan astutely illuminates the inner journey of mind and imagination. There are beautiful and redemptive meanderings into art, architecture, poetry and sky views that pull against irrecoverable loss, the complexities of blame and responsibility, societal truths exposed and a child’s struggle to integrate it all.
It is at once a story for the love and pondering of skyscrapers and a homage to the filaments of history, healing and hope.
