This lively book offers a fresh look at the history of anthropological theory. Covering key concepts and theorists, Mark Moberg examines the historical context of anthropological ideas and the contested nature of anthropology itself. Anthropological ideas regarding human diversity have always been rooted in the socio-political conditions in which they arose and exploring them in context helps students understand how and why they evolved, and how theory relates to life and society. Illustrated throughout, this engaging text moves away from the dry recitation of past viewpoints in anthropology and brings the subject matter to life.

Review
"Moberg does a masterful job of weaving together historical context, anthropological theory, and present-day issues and sensibilities. Rather than standing at a critical distance and taking potshots at our disciplinary ancestors, Moberg shows students clearly how anthropology's ideas and theoretical stances have arisen out of, and made sense within, their historical and geographical contexts. His style is engaging, readable, and often laugh-out-loud funny. How often can one say that about a theory textbook?" - Julie Adkins, University of Texas at Arlington, USA
"While other textbooks on anthropological theory give token accounts of the socio-political influences and historical contexts that produced ‘ruling ideas’ on the nature of society and the origins of cultural diversity, these processes are the central focus of Moberg’s unique analysis. Moving beyond biographical sketches and historical vignettes, the book is a lively exploration of how ‘paradigms and politics’ of the past and present inform anthropological thought." - William L. Alexander, University of North Carolina Wilmington, USA
“From the beginning of Engaging Anthropological Theory, Moberg directly addresses an audience of freshman students in a motivating way, conveying a strong sense of identification with the discipline…The whole book brings the history of anthropological thought to life. It becomes clear from the very first page that this is not a typical theory textbook, as each chapter is peppered with the author’s personal anecdotes and experiences.” - David Parduhn, University of Hamburg, Germany

Excellent book!
By Ronald Kephart
I found this book to be an excellent introduction to anthropological theory and a welcome anthropological critique of the so-called "philosophies" (Rand's "objectivism," "libertarianism," etc.) that the earlier reviewer appears to like so much. This earlier reviewer clearly misses the point about Marx, which is sad since he is apparently taking an anthropology course using this book. Marx, after all these years, remains one of history's most insightful critics of predatory capitalism, and a good case can be made for considering him a pioneer in social science and even an honorary anthropologist.
I teach anthropology. I have taught theory, and I only wish Moberg's book had been available then. I would certainly use Moberg's book if the opportunity returns.

makes some pretty funny jokes throughout the chapters
By Kendra Vaughn
(First, I want to make mention this book was written for an undergraduate theory course but is applicable to any level of study or for lay readers.) Learning Theory is always a task. Even with this book it takes me a couple hours to get through a chapter thoroughly to be able to discuss it meaningfully in my seminar style graduate course. However, Moberg has put a lot of effort into studying effective teaching of theory, so the book: does not focus on rote memorization, he writes in an understandable manner, the little jargon there is- he's sure to clarify and expand upon, makes some pretty funny jokes throughout the chapters, uses practical real life examples of theory application, presents positive aspects and limitations of different theory structures, openly expresses his preferences while emphasizing you develope your own to suit your needs, and brings up interesting/weird/neat tidbits about the anthropologists (and others) he speaks of. Ultimately, it is just as laborous of a task as other theory reading (if you are trying to get anything out of it), but you are not tortured during.

Don't buy the Kindle Edition - Hard to navigate, no page numbers or tables of contents
By rebekah logan
This rating is not for content--content is 5 stars. Moberg breathes life into the study of "old dead white guys". However--purchase the hard copy!
The Kindle edition is useless if you are student as it does not include a table of contents or page numbers. My professor often assigns sections within chapters - and its impossible to find the content unless you have an exact sentence to locate it. I don't understand why Kindle would not include a clickable table of contents in this book.
