About the Author

Shripad T. Revankar is a professor of nuclear engineering at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, and visiting professor at POSTECH, South Korea, in the Division of Advanced Nuclear Engineering. He received his MSc (1977), PhD (1983) in physics from Karnataka University, India, and M.Eng. (1982) in nuclear engineering from McMaster University Canada. He has published more than 300 refereed research papers in journal and conferences, is editor-in-chief of Frontier Energy-Nuclear Energy, serves on the editorial boards of eight international journals including Heat Transfer Engineering, ASME Journal of Fuel Cell Science and Technology, and is also an ASME Fellow and winner of several awards.

Pradip Majumdar is a professor and chair of mechanical engineering, and the director of the Heat and Mass Transfer Laboratory in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, Illinois. He received his BS degree (1975) in mechanical engineering from B.E College, University of Calcutta, and MS (1980) and PhD (1986) degrees in mechanical engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago. He has worked on a number of federal and industrial research projects and published over 100 refereed research papers in archival journals and conference proceedings. He serves as the editor-in-chief of the Transactions of Fluid Mechanics, International Journal.

Logical, informative, and very well-written

Alexander Grab has crafted a marvelous analysis of Europe during the Napoleonic period. This is a well-written and enlightening volume that details the application and effect of French (particularly Napoleonic) hegemony throughout much of the continent between 1792 and 1815. It provides a perfect balance of detail and brevity. It is "low-density" in its presentation, making it easy to read and comprehend. And yet it manages to paint a comprehensive picture and accomplishes its stated aims remarkably well.

Grab begins his work with an excellent introduction that outlines recent scholarship on the Napoleonic period. He emphasizes that his own work is meant as a synthesis of secondary literature intended to provide an overview of Napoleonic rule in a European context. The organization of the chapters is excellent and lends itself to easy comprehension. It begins with a chapter that provides a chronological narrative of the French Revolutionary era (beginning in 1792) and on through the rise of the French Empire (under Napoleon) to its height in 1810-1812. The second chapter provides an overview of Napoleonic rule in Europe, emphasizing the common threads and themes observed throughout the empire. Ten subsequent chapters function as the core of the book, with each chapter dedicated to a different country that--at one time or another during the period--was incorporated into the French Empire (France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany (as it existed during the era), Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Italy, the Grand Duchy of Warsaw (Poland), and Illyria). These chapters examine in detail the application of French rule, its effect on the country and its development, and the legacy of Napoleonic dominance. These ten chapters can easily function as standalone essays that can be read independently of each other. Following these essays, Grab provides another chronological chapter that picks up where his first chapter left off, covering the invasion of Russia in 1812 and on through the French defeats in the Wars of the Sixth and Seventh Coalitions. These "flanking" chronological chapters help weave the standalone essays together, providing overall continuity.

The major theme of Grab's work is on the "Janus face" of Napoleonic rule in Europe. Napoleon was a harbinger of change and modernity in Europe, precipitating major reforms and, in some locations, virtually ending the existence of the Ancien Régime--the monarchical and aristocratic social and political system that had dominated Europe for centuries. These efforts created substantial legacies in many countries in the empire, like the establishment of uniform legal systems, improved primary and secondary education, and centralized state apparatuses supported by technical and professional bureaucracies. Despite these progressive reforms and their modernizing effects, Grab emphasizes that French rule was unmistakably characterized by exploitation as well. The transformations in imperial territories were predicated on Napoleon's need for efficient tax collection and conscription systems to feed his inexorable war machine. Napoleon ultimately engineered an empire intended to enrich and elevate France above the rest of Europe. Still, the concluding chapter emphasizes the lasting influence Napoleonic reforms had in many parts of Europe, even after the collapse of the empire and Napoleon's final defeat and exile.

Grab's writing style is clear and easy to follow. He makes great use of topical headings within each of his chapters, separating his narrative into clear and distinct sections. Each of his chapters on the countries in the Napoleonic Empire follows a generally chronological progression of the country through the Napoleonic period and ends with a section on the lasting effects and legacy of Napoleonic rule. This format makes each chapter easy to read and understand.

My only issue with this book is that it lacks an analysis of the countries in Europe that were not under the domination of France, notably the other major rivals to the French Empire: Britain, Russia, Austria, Prussia, and the Ottoman Empire. Having an analysis of each of these major powers (and other minor powers such as Denmark and Sweden) and their relationships to the Napoleonic Empire would have provided a truly comprehensive analysis of Europe during the period. Still, this is outside the stated scope of Grab's work, which was to analyze the effect of Napoleonic reforms in the countries of the empire, and can hardly be called a criticism.

This is a great book and I highly recommend it for any reader interested in the Napoleonic period, particularly if the interest is in a broader European context as opposed to a French-centric analysis.

Thorough Yet Concise And Objective As Well

Napoleon And The Transformation Of Europe, by Alexander Grab, is a volume thorough yet concise. The author writes a history and an analysis of the political and social policies of Napoleon in France and throughout Europe. Chapters relate the changes attempted and effected in each of the regions to come under the domination of Napoleon.
Well researched and written, the book is particularly appreciated for having a complete lack of bias. It is rare to read a book in which the attitude of the author in respect of Napoleon is not apparent. Grab is consistently objective when writing about the administrations established by Napoleon in Europe noting "The Janus Face of Napoleon's Rule: Reform and Exploitation".

There should be 4 books in your shelf: Damages, Rules of the Road, Polarizing the Case and Reptile. Rules is a must no matter what type of personal injury case you are taking to trial. I also recommending reading Jim Perdue's books.

more essential than David Ball on Damages !

Over the last 5 years I only battle against lawyers paid by the big business insurance industry. My practice is insurance breach of contract law and auto. I hold myself out as a trial lawyer because I do not accept the crap offers from the claims assessment software that every insurer uses to evaluate human life. To that end, in order to do right by your clients you must challenge the insurers of your clients or the people who harm your clients (we can not sue the insurer of the negligent driver directly) And you must be armed with proven techniques that work. That is what this book is, one of those books you tab, highlight, copy, reuse, a reference tool. This book is a must, an absolute must for anyone dealing with insurers in any capacity. It is chocked full of useful, practicable information that you can use right away. It teaches you how to teach a jury on what 'reasonable' means when they delay and deny meritorious claims. If you are a mill and settle every case without filing, accepting the low ball offers, not doing right by your client, etc., then just keep doing what you've always done and you'll get what you always gotten. But if you correct the injustices, fight for what is right, are on the side of society that helps people, not corporations, then you must by this book and use it. I have read all of David Ball's books, attended ATLA juror bias college, conventions, books on closing, jury bias, Jury Works, TLC, NITA, etc. and with all of that I found this book very useful. I refer to it before every deposition, trial, etc. I do not know the authors of the book, (I wish I did) but they are super accomplished trial lawyers. I speak from my heart on a book that will help people who care about people - and that means winning jury trials because that is the only check on our society. Remember what Thomas Jefferson said, "the right to a jury trial is more important that the right to vote." If you practice insurance bad faith law, auto law, or any law where insurance is involved, you must own this book. (...)

Incoherent

This chaotic and rambling book does not rise to the level of coherent scholarship. It reads as if the author simply recorded facts as he came across them and reflections as they occurred to him, and christened their totality a book when they reached sufficient bulk. This means that the book may contain some remark of value here or there but that it is on the whole unreliable, as the author has not conducted systematic research on the topics he is expounding.

For instance, Brown claims that 17th century research "often demonstrated that what some ancients had considered 'line-like' problems like angle trisection ... were really 'solid'" (p. 20), a claim which is backed up by a footnote saying that "Pappus had used the quadratrix ... to trisect ... an angle" (p. 20). This is highly misleading to say the least since Pappus explicitly used the trisection of the angle as an example of a solid problem when motivating his classification in Book IV. In fact, Brown himself gives the demonstration in an appendix: "Here is one of two solutions given by Pappus to trisect an angle using a hyperbola" (p. 271). It is a sign of how disjointed and poorly researched the book is that Brown does not even notice that he is blatantly contradicting himself.

Brown also makes quite a fuss about some relatively harmless ways in which Leibniz's calculus is different from ours, e.g., in being based on curves and their differentials rather than functions and their derivatives. But unfortunately his own analyses are inconsistent with his posturing. For example, when Leibniz states the integral representation of the arcsine, Brown proposes to "verify" it "by what was probably his method" (p. 142). Brown's method is to differentiate sin(arcsin(x)), which is a prototypical instance of the exact opposite of the essence of the Leibnizian calculus in that it is based on functions, inverse functions, and abstract derivatives. Much more likely, and in line with Brown's own characterisation of Leibniz's calculus, is that Leibniz found the result as an arc-length integral, which reflects directly the geometrical meaning of the arcsine and does not involve any mysterious alchemy of functions a la Euler.

This book also proves once again that wherever the revenues of despicably overpriced books such as this are being spent, it is certainly not on proofreading. There are superfluous words ("by from which", p. 144), missing words ("it will always the case", p. 149), double commas (p. 45), and periods at the end of questions (p. 147) but often not at the end of sentences that end with a footnote (e.g. pp. 7, 24, 110, 232).

A QFT book for physicists not for mathematicians

This is a QFT book written by a physicist (Veltman is one of the

1999 Physics Nobel prize winners) for physicists. Mathematical

rigour was definitely not one of Veltman's major concerns when he

wrote this book. However clarity was indeed a big issue for him

and that is most unusual if you take into account that most Nobel

prize awarded physicist, are usually much more concerned about

"image", "posterity" and "mathematical rigour" than by

pedagogical matters.

This book is a very good one to start with if you want to learn

QFT. It makes no use of the path integral formalism (which is the

prefered one by "modern" QFT theorists) . The canonical

formalism (the one used in this book) makes explicit the local

nature of QFT; this is an important issue since locallity stems

from Lorentz invariance and QFT is nothing but the physical

theory resulting from quantum mechanics and restricted

relativity. I fully agree with the statement that the path

integral method should be sistematically discarded in

introductory QFT books like this one.

As its title indicates, Feynman diagrams are the central issue of

this book. Veltman explains in the introduction: "This is then

the aim: to make it clear which principles are behind the

(Feynman) rules and to define clarly the calculation details".

This seems to be the natural choice for such an introductory

text; quoting Veltman again: " ... the theory (meaning QFT), or

rather the succesful part (of it), is perturbation theory ...

Perturbation theory means Feynman diagrams ".

This book provides a clear logical frame that supports the

calculation machinery of perturbative QFT's and should be

recommended to any person willing to introduce himself/herself in

Quantum Field Theory as a first choice course book.

Taking into account that this is an introductory book, its

short extension (200 pages) its scope is limited to QED and no

serious attempt is made to treat non-abelian theories.

One minor (for me it is minor, since my english is also rather

poor) annoyance: Even I (my mother tonge is spanish) can see

that the writing style is not very good and that some of the used

expressions are nothing more that literal translations from dutch

into english.

Thinking with Feynman diagrams

This is a book on quantum field theory using, much more than what is usual, the language of Feynman diagrams, which are pictorial-analytic expressions for terms of the perturbative series for S-matrix elements. Several years ago what could be considered a cruder version of this book circulated widely as a Yellow Report from CERN. It was an admirable text, from which most of us learned how to write the Feynman rules for gauge theories in exotic gauges, and how to renormalize everything by using the dimensional methods. Now comes the book version, polished so that beginners can use it, and with a little more tissue connecting the bones. The Yellow Report was called Diagrammar and became something of a religion. Perusing the book I see no reason why it should not have a comparable success. I particularly admire the graphic derivation of the Ward identities and the (also graphical) treatment of unitarity, very difficult to find antwhere else. The author, Veltman, is a great! authority in Field Theory and a fantastic teacher.

A QFT book for engineers!

This book takes any engineer with a feel for Maxwell's equations and a little common sense about Schroedinger's equation into the promissed land of quantum field theory.

Veltman spends a lot of time helping the reader get his or her head wrapped around the idea of Hilbert space. This cleared my head for what was to follow.

It is one of the few books that does not assume you already know the subject. I recommend it for electrical engineers like myself. No idea is hard to understand when the author values communicating notions over notation!
