House of Darkness: House of Light- The True Story, Vol. 1, by Andrea Perron

Roger and Carolyn Perron purchased the home of their dreams and eventual nightmares in December of 1970. The Arnold Estate, located just beyond the village of Harrisville, Rhode Island seemed the idyllic setting in which to raise a family. The couple unwittingly moved their five young daughters into the ancient and mysterious farmhouse. Secrets were kept and then revealed within a space shared by mortal and immortal alike. Time suddenly became irrelevant; fractured by spirits making their presence known then dispersing into the ether. The house is a portal to the past and a passage to the future. This is a sacred story of spiritual enlightenment, told some thirty years hence. The family is now somewhat less reticent to divulge a closely-guarded experience. Their odyssey is chronicled by the eldest sibling and is an unabridged account of a supernatural excursion. Ed and Lorraine Warren investigated this haunting in a futile attempt to intervene on their behalf. They consider the Perron family saga to be one of the most compelling and significant of a famously ghost-storied career as paranormal researchers. During a séance gone horribly wrong, they unleashed an unholy hostess; the spirit called Bathsheba . . . a God-forsaken soul. Perceiving herself to be mistress of the house, she did not appreciate the competition. Carolyn had long been under siege; overt threats issued in the form of fire . . . a mother's greatest fear. It transformed the woman in unimaginable ways. After nearly a decade the family left a once beloved home behind though it will never leave them, as each remains haunted by a memory. This tale is an inspiring testament to the resilience of the human spirit on a pathway of discovery: an eternal journey for the living and the dead.

About the Author
Andrea Perron was born in Rhode Island in 1958. She is a graduate of Chatham College in Pittsburgh, Pa. having earned an inter-disciplinary degree in philosophy and English literature. This memoir waited thirty years to be told, allowing the time and distance necessary for her family to reveal these long held secrets. The author is currently preparing for release of the second volume in this remarkable trilogy. John Shaw created the cover portrait of their farmhouse as a parting gift. Two months after the Perron family abandoned this place in the country, John, all of nineteen years old, drove from Rhode Island to Georgia. He presented his friends with the watercolor; painted from memory, in memory of a special house which touched his life as well. It remains a treasured keepsake. They loved him then as they love him now

Sorry to say--but don't buy this book
By Rae
I bought this book after I heard the movie for it was coming out. And I finished it merely because I had paid so much (in Kindle terms) for it. Clearly, the author is a well educated, erudite (one of her favorite words) woman. And clearly the author can write. But, she can't write this story. There is no plot line, no chronology, not clear recounting of events. It's merely a warm up to the main act, which must be--if she writes at this pace, in the last 10 pages of book 3. This is not a ghost story book, this is a philosophical venture with a smattering of "ghostly" incidents strewn through it amongst quotes from authors and philosophers. I'm sorry, but I thought editors would keep such poor writing from being printed. Under no circumstances, believe the review that his is a "page turner". It is not. And if you wanted to write a book on philosophy, do it instead, but don't waste the readers time. And for goodness sake, stop using the word "ether".

How not to write a book
By Amazon Customer
Count me as a first time reviewer, and this book was so poorly written, I simply had to put my two cents in. I have come to a totally new appreciation for editors and the rest of the staff at professional publishing houses. Andrea writes in one chapter about an incident in 1972. In the next chapter, it's now 1976. Suddenly you're reading about how they'd only been in the house "a couple of months." Huh? What? A story, any story, simply has to flow. This doesn't. It's choppy and takes you all over.

In one chapter she suddenly brings up "Holly." Unfortunately, she doesn't actually introduce the character until several chapters later - it's at that point we find out who this "Holly" person is. There are typos in here, and no, I'm not normally the typo police, but it seems unprofessional. Andrea also writes about the Warrens all the way through the first book, but you don't find out how it is they came to be there or what actually happened until book 2. Had she put things in chronological order, her readers might understand more of what she was trying to convey to us with what the Warrens brought to the story.

Okay, so Andrea gets a dog and names her Bathsheba, then they encounter "Bathsheba" at the house. I kept waiting for her to comment on such a coincidence, but she doesn't. It just seemed natural to me that she would - otherwise why even put it in? She also brings up an incident and writes about it more than once. We got it the first time, thanks! And enough with the "Boo!" It's way overdone.

How many of you want to throttle the mother yourself? After a couple of incidents in the 'burbs, she sees this place, takes every dime out of the bank account and they make the move work. Yet, after her children are frightened, threatened, nearly killed (not to mention what she, herself, was going through), she still keeps her family there, year after year - subjecting them to horrors they still carry.

I have to admit, I skipped over much of the book (especially volume 2), when Andrea starts carrying on about philosophical musings. That's not my cup of tea. I grew up on a haunted farm. There can never be a book that will be able to convey the intense terror, the dread, the heart pounding and the sheer intensity of dealing with something not of this world; but I read these to try and understand, maybe get some insight into what I went through. To be fair, there are some gold nuggets in this book. There just aren't enough to overcome the bad writing. I really, really, really wish I'd read these reviews before purchasing the books.

Amityville Called, They'd Like Their Story Back
By WhosYourChubby
Update 7/23/2013

Andrea Perron has simultaneously proven both the failure of the American education system and the desperation of Hollywood in these modern times in which they'll slog for years through endless pages of drivel and sophomoric narrative padding in order to tease a semi-coherent and decently scary story out of what would otherwise be nothing more than a prime candidate for both the physical and digital recycle bins. If you can believe it, self-proclaimed "author," Andrea, actually holds an inter-disciplinary degree in philosophy and English literature from Chatham College in Pittsburgh, PA. Meaning that she actually went to school, spent the time, and paid a whole bunch of money to learn about English literature, and still produced these "novels." I don't know whether to laugh at or cry for her.

Now having seen the movie, I can safely say that everything I wrote in my review is absolutely, completely and 100% justified; besides the names, they didn't use a single line or event from the book in the movie, much to the moviegoers' delight, I'm sure. As the "Warrens," played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga (who are a bajillion times more sane, logical and sympathetic than the Warrens are in real life), explain in the movie, ghosts are not able to possess people. Only demons can do that. This means that the only ghost they kept from the book, Bathsheba, is now a demon and no longer a ghost. Surprise, surprise.

To the person who said that the movie was going to be different because it was from the "Warren Files," and more from their point of view, let me just say how funny it is that the Warrens just happened to skip over the part in the book (in Vol. 2) where the husband physically threw them out of the house and refused to let them back in and how the story, according to the movie, is now about how the Warrens have super powers and save the day sans capes and spandex.

If you've come here after seeing the movie looking for more details about what happened in Harrisville, save your money and turn back while you can. This book has nothing to do with the movie at all (which is why the movie is so good), and will do nothing but give you a literary migraine.

Original Review:
Let me begin my diatribe, if you'll indulge me, fair reader, with a disturbing trend I've noticed in the reviews on this book. Almost all of the people who gave it a 5 star rating, or even a slightly positive review, are from or around the town the book is written in, Harrisville, Rhode Island. Apparently these people are desperate for some vicarious fame by association with the town this dreadfully written book takes place in. Read them with a grain of salt. If you're looking for an honest review from someone who is not skeptical of the supernatural, just critical of this, and I use the term loosely, "author's" work, then please read on for a detailed, unbiased review.

I think the reason it took Andrea 30 years to write this book was that she needed to read "The Amityville Horror", "The Devil in Connecticut" and "In a Dark Place: The Story of a True Haunting" a few times so she could steal as much of their stories as possible for her own. She also needed time to wait for Poltergeist, Burnt Offerings and the Exorcist to come out on DVD so she could watch them all a few times (and their special features!) for some new ideas. This book is nothing but a derivative retelling of better, scarier ghost stories. All she did was put her own family into the roles of other, more interesting characters; your basic "fanfic," if you will. The funny part is, I could have lived with that if not for the horrible writing. A good story is a good story, even if the general theme has told before. But even a great story loses its gravitas and poignancy when told by a seven year old, which is about Andrea's level of writing. Well, to be fair, it's more like a seven year old who knows how to press Shift+F7 in Word and come up with bigger words to use from the list of synonyms, but who then overlooks the green squiggles of the Grammar Check function. She also entertained the infamous nutbags, Ed and Lorraine Warren. All you have to do is a quick Google search on them and you will find out how untrustworthy these two are. Being they also worked on the Amityville case and the two Connecticut cases, I can see why this story features all of their greatest hits: who could forget the classic, "It must be a DEMON," or "The spirit is mocking the Holy Trinity," and the ever delightful, "Of course we have no proof of ANYTHING, you're supposed to just believe whatever we say!" Could it be mere coincidence that Harrisville reeks of the same pseudo-religious, quasi-supernatural hokum featured in Amityville and Connecticut? I think not!

Let's start with Andrea's grammar and punctuation. She loves to put about 3 bold words on each page as she thinks the reader is too dumb to get the meaning of what she is trying to tell us. You know when an airheaded teenage girl gets upset and overemphasizes a word to show she's really upset? That's what I feel like she's doing. "But `Moooooooom' there's like `totally' a ghost and it's really `scary.'" There's no good reason to emphasize words like that. If you put the word there, trust us, as the readers, to be able to know how that word is supposed to work with the rest of them to convey the idea your describing in that sentence. She constantly insults our collective intelligence. For example, she feels she has to emphasize the fact that during an argument over money that someone is feeling "angry."

She also likes to tell us what everyone was "feeling" for 3 or more pages without describing the actual event that caused the upset. If you are lucky, she will tell you a few chapters later and then she rehashes the 3 pages again of what everyone was "feeling." It reminded me of when your teacher wants you to write a 500 word essay. Like an underachieving, lazy student, most of the book is just filling space. At one point she describes in painfully overblown details of her Mother's meltdown in the kitchen over her husband killing flies, ala Amityville Horror. She then copied and pasted the same story later on in the book hoping the reader would not remember she already told this story. She did this a few times. Maybe she never went back and read over what she wrote. It was painful enough for me to read once, so I can't imagine what torture she was facing having to re-read it as the author.

Apparently desperate to show that she has some grasp of what colons and semi-colons are Andrea doesn't hesitate to use them at every possible turn. Ironically, she doesn't use them correctly. She loves to do stuff like this: "The mother had a bad feeling; a dread she felt." A little redundant, am I right? Half the time those little add-on's are just terrible, as in, "...; an angelic angel." Keep your sanity and just skip over anything immediately to the right of any colon or semicolon. What this book really needs is a, "colonoscopy." (Cue rimshot) You thought that was a terrible pun? Just you wait; Andrea's got a metric ton of them waiting for you! Like, "They did not stand a ghost of a chance with the ghosts in the house!" Also, I think Andrea suffers from multiple personality disorder. I mean, what else could possibly explain her tendency to switch back and forth from the third person narrative to the second person and back to the third every few pages?

In all honesty, I would have never finished this book if I had not paid money for it. You will find that skipping long monologues of pure, unadulterated "feeling" will help you to read the book faster. I think she fancies herself the next Steven King and thinks that if she puts as many words on a page as he does, she'll be just as critically acclaimed.

Now before you say, "Oh, he is a skeptic and a non-believer, which is why he is so mean about all this," that is just not true. I do believe in ghosts and have lived in 2 houses that had ghosts, one who made me uncomfortable enough to the point I did move out. I won't directly say that her book is full of lies, (libel laws and all that), but I think it is strange that all the Warren cases tell the same story: A family moves into a dream house, it turns out to be haunted, the father will not believe it until the very end, Lorraine Warren kicks open the front door and starts yelling about demons and then everyone gets a nice, lucrative movie deal out of it. By the way, "The Conjuring," based on The Warren Files concerning this case, is coming this summer to a theater near you! And even if it was real, what kind of mother would subject her 5 kids to this kind of thing for 10 year? Yes, 10 YEARS!!

So to spare you the terror of trying to read this book, I'll summarize it for you: Estrogen soaked family pester their absentee salesman father to throw all of their money into a farm they don't really need and that the owner is super desperate to offload on them. After ignoring this first warning sign, the family can't get warm in a 200 year old house in Rhode Island during winter (umm... duh?) and keep smelling death in certain rooms. After ignoring this second warning sign, the mother is attacked by the ghost of Joan Crawford (think wire hangers), the kids start seeing creepy stuff and the doors very politely open themselves. Flies gather in the house where the kids keep sandwiches under the bed (shocking!) and then the mother has a nightmare and claws up her husband who is apparently a very sound sleeper. After trying to set herself on fire several times, the mother spirals into a generic supernatural obsession (cue the montage of Mom in the local library discovering the evil history of the house), and ropes everyone she possibly can into it, culminating with the arrival of the Warrens who proceed to add a few Mentos to the mom's glass of crazy, which happens to taste a lot like diet soda. Add in some levitating beds, telepathic crows, self-sweeping brooms and other fun things, and you've got a recipe for a good kind of crazy that is seriously hampered by the author's grievous lack of an editor.

All martial arts change with three inches of steel.
By Vincent Damore
Dan Inosanto has been one of the best teachers and proponents of the martial arts. His resume need not be repeated. In this book he explains and teaches the fighting system of his homeland.Unless a system realistically addresses weapons, sadly few do, it cannot call itself a complete martial art.For non ballistic( firearms) weapons, Kali has stood the test of time.Amongst my most prized books is a signed copy I received from Dan Inosanto attained at a seminar. His teaching ability is legendary and at your fingertips with this book or anything he does.

The text itself is martial arts history
By Miroku Nemeth
If you have read Bruce Lee's "Tao of Jeet Kune Do" and respect his philosophy, you will love this book from his foremost student, GM Dan Inosanto.

Though there are many with higher credentials than myself, my sons and I have trained in Bandalan Doce Pares Eskrima under Master Antonio Lucero for over five years,so my experience of reading this book was perhaps very different from that of someone untrained in Eskrima/Kali/Arnis. Our grandmaster goes back with GM Inosanto, so perhaps it is not so suprising that I loved this book. It has much in the way of philosophy, history, and the structure of armed and unarmed techniques in this book that is invaluable. The stories of true Grandmasters, warrior legends, and veterans of dozens of fights to the death like Angel Cabales, Regino Ellustrisimo,Leo Giron, John Lacoste, and Floro Villabrille are amazing, as it is the tried and proven combat reality of FMA that makes it a unique and beautiful art.

There are many parts of the book that I enjoyed, but I found these passages under the heading of "Weapon Characteristics" to be a very important summation of why Kali/Eskrima/Arnis is such an important and deadly martial art.

"Escrimadors claim the ability to pick up any hand-wielded weapon, regarless of its shape, and use it effectively. To someone unfamiliar with Escrima principles, that sounds presumptuous, but consider the pattern of angles [covered earlier in the book and similar in all Escrima styles] again. There's only so many ways to hit an opponent.

If you're already familiar with one or more weapons, all the better. Swing the weapon, jab the weapon, hit anything with the weapon and see if you don't use some form of that pattern. The angles....of Escrima and Kali are 'principles. They have nothing to do with styles or faction.'

Instead of thinking of a weapon as belonging to the Chinese or the Japanese or the Filipinos or any particular martial art, instead of thinking of a weapon by its exotic name, look at the weapon, look at the weapon. The performance of a weapon is affected by its characteristics, not by its origin or its name." (128)

There are also many photographs and captions illustrating the efficacy of empty hand Eskrima/Kali and the way in which there is a unity between weapons-based and empty hand combat styles. The ideas on solo training and environmental training are very good as well (fighting in a doorway to defend your home, from behind a wall, etc.).

"Once you have learned the basics from any instructor, you must seek elsewhere. This elsewhere is 'within yourself.' Truth is in being yourself, 'totally' and 'alively'." Dan Inosanto The Filipino Martial Arts

Loved this book growing up!
By tibbs omalay
This book shows the old grandmasters of escrima at the time, 1970s-80s. It is a prime introductory guide to show the non-informed martial arts enthusiasts/students/fans the history of the eskrimadors. Many of the Stockton GMs are shown and they explain their art and share some stories of their past. I loved this book and really hope that amazon can acquire the Kindle digital version asap. There were times growing up and reading the pages of this great book over and over again.

Other books are very good, but Bob outdoes himself here. This is a great book for Spiritual Warfare against Jezebel, and her Buddies. Bob pulls no punches, and tells it like it is.

1 Corinthians (Baker Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament), by David E. Garland

Paul's first letter to the Corinthians is one of the most important epistles in the New Testament. David Garland's thoughtful new commentary draws on extensive research and engages the best of contemporary scholarship while providing a readable study that will be accessible to thoughtful readers as well as students, pastors, and scholars. After considering the context of the letter and the social and cultural setting of Corinth, Garland turns to his exegetical work. An introduction to each major unit of thought is followed by the author's own translation of the Greek text. In the course of his verse-by-verse commentary, he incorporates references to other ancient writings that help explain particular aspects of Paul's meaning or provide information on the social and cultural context. He also refers to the work of other commentators and provides extensive notes for further reading and research.

Review
"The Baker Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament series has set a new standard in reader-friendliness with its attractive presentation that combines detailed exegetical comment on the Greek text with accessibility for those who have little or no knowledge of the original language of the New Testament."

From the Back Cover
"I warmly commend this commentary. I am impressed by its careful scholarship and sane judgments. It offers reliable and constructive exegesis based on a wide interaction with scholarly literature. It retains an eye to theology and to pastoral application, with clear comments and often apt turns of phrase."
-Anthony C. Thiselton, University of Nottingham

"A major achievement. The author displays an enviable grasp of the cultural challenges raised in the letter as well as an assured familiarity with biblical and Greco-Roman sources and the secondary authorities. At the same time his text is both readable and relevant."
-Paul Barnett, teaching fellow at Regent College

"This thoroughly researched, clearly written volume is a fine addition to an already respected series. It will offer seasoned guidance to its grateful readers."
-Charles H. Talbert, Baylor University

"We have come to expect from David Garland work that is well researched, wise in its judgments, and instructive for life and thought. This commentary does not disappoint. Garland's work is fully informed and offers sound and useful discussion of this crucial letter. This commentary is a significant and worthwhile achievement."
-Klyne Snodgrass, North Park Theological Seminary

"Garland makes an outstanding contribution to the BECNT series with this scholarly work on 1 Corinthians. Readers will appreciate the thorough attention given to matters of interpretation in this commentary, especially Garland's careful work with the historical and social backgrounds and with the Old Testament and Hellenistic materials that shed light on Paul's letter. The commentary is written with enthusiasm, insight, and genuine wit, so that readers will enjoy as well as profit from studying this volume."
-Marion L. Soards, Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary

the best first corinthians commentary that I have encountered
By kleytos
Several years ago (before Garland's book came out) I did a fairly detailed study over about 6 months on the book of 1 Corinthians. I relied fairly heavily on the commentaries by Thiselton and also by Fee. In the subsequent years, I frequently re-read sections of both commentaries. Recently I wanted to get a more clear understanding of the controversial passages about headcovering and women's silence (in chapters 11 and 14, respectively) so I re-read the relevant portions of both commentaries again. I was pretty unsatisfied with both so I went to the library to see if I could find anything else more insightful. Happily, I encountered Garland's book.

Garland's book was much more helpful than either Thiselton or Fee. It was more lucid, kept the same high level of scholarship, and even touched on application! I continued reading the book and have come to the conclusion that it is the best commentary on 1 Corinthians available, for several reasons:

- It interacts with all the major views of a given position without becoming too bogged down (something that I think happens often with Thiselton). It is still a long book, but substantially shorter than Thiselton's.

- Instead of being merely a commentary on commentaries, Garland tries to persuade the reader of the legimitacy of what the author feels is the correct view. In contrast, you can read many 1 Corinthian commentaries and not even know what the author finally thinks!

- It has excellent scholarship with a good degree of balance. Fee, in contrast, holds to extreme views on the controversial women passages (such as arguing that 1 Corinthians 14:33-34 wasn't even written by Paul!).

- Garland lightly touches on application. While the majority of the book is on exegesis, Garland helpfully states the relevance of his conclusions to church life today. Thiselton does not really do this, which is unfortunate.

- His prose is lucid and sharp.

In summary, I believe that Garland's volume is now the best commentary on 1 Corinthians available. Bravo to Baker for this volume. Hopefully other books in the series will have the same standard of quality.

Execellent Tool Worth Owning
By David A. Bielby
I'm a pastor who preaches through books of the bible. I am just finishing my current series on 1 Corinthians. I've found this commentary to be one that I would not want to work without. It's really one of the best ones I own. I've found David Garland's commentary to be consistently even handed, careful to evaluate the text honestly, and helpful in almost every situation I've used this commentary for. In particular I found this commentary more helpful on his treatment of 1 Corinthians 11, 13 & 15 than most of my other tools on 1 Corinthians. I've been using about 15 different commentaries on 1 Corinthians, including Worthington, Fee, Keener, Thiselton's NIGTC & Thiselton's Short Pastoral Commentary on 1 Corinthians, as well as a bunch of other commentaries like Prior (Bible Speaks Today Series) & Life Application Commentary. All of them have individual strengths, but this commentary, Garland's, has a lot more material than most of the other commentaries (except for NICNT & NIGTC) I own. Not only does it have more material, but most of the material is helpful.

This series of commentaries does one thing that I don't appreciate. The editors have decided to put summaries at the beginning of each segment of the commentary in a medium gray shaded box. This does set apart the text that is a summary of what follows, but it does not copy well on a copier. So if you like a summary and want to use that in a small group discussion you have to lug the entire book in with you. It is also difficult on the eyes to read a few pages of that black print on medium gray background. I just don't like it.

Garland sometimes doesn't summarize his material as well as I would like to see. For example, the section on 1 Corinthians 13 where he introduces his exegetical comments on love has some statements that are meant to summarize what follows, but almost contradict the most important point that follows. They sounded good, but as I thought about them, I became worried that he was going to add to the published material that wrongly defines agape as 'unconditional love'. Sometimes he also spends a lot of time on things that most pastors (at least myself) don't really care about. For example in his discussion on love he gives 23 pages of material. The first 4 pages are his summary, but he never accurately defines love in his summary. He does later on in his detailed exegesis, but in his summary he says things like "Love is concern for their community" and "love is the new aeon already present". He says that love is the marrow of the Christian existence. In the 4 pages of summary material he gives two pages to the discussion of the raging and worthless debate on what kind of literary passage does 1 Corinthians 13 represent. If scholars ever figure that out, will it help us? I think that kind of stuff is pretty much a waste of ink and paper, but that's just my opinion. He obviously thought it was worth half of his summarization of 1 Corinthians 13! But he never got to the point that some have written about...and EVERY scholar publishing articles on agape needs to have the courage to write about the fact that the word agape does not mean unconditional love just because it is the word agape. He didn't say that...although he in essence comes to that conclusion without talking about the unconditional love definition pop myth.

So anyhow, much to my delight when I arrived at his detailed exegesis of 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 Garland (to use a baseball metaphor) hits a grand slam home run. He goes to the fine work of Spicq (French scholar and quotes his 3 volume set's article on agape-which has the best definition on agape in print). Theological Lexicon of the New Testament 3 Volume Set (By the way, he doesn't cite Spicq's exhaustive work on Agape. But he is the published authority on detailed study of this term historically and is the most helpful scholar in print on agape. Agape in the New Testament, 3 Volumes

It made me so happy to see Garland pull through and define agape as "demonstration of love" that I wanted to shout 'yes'! He defines agape in this section as something that is not an inner feeling alone, but that it must put itself on display...quoting Spicq verbatim. So he ends up contradicting the summary section of his commentary. Agape is not 'concern for the community'. It is a demonstration of love. I especially love his links to the unmentioned backdrop of the 1 Corinthians passage (Paul doesn't say it in chapter 13), but the clear demonstration of God's love for us all in the offering of his Son on the cross. Bravo!! Pastors-these things preach well! Don't overlook this material. If we goof up the definition of love, we seriously miss what the accurate meaning is of many biblical passages. For 'agape' is a primary theme in the New Testament, if not THE primary theme.

He also handles the 'perfect' term correctly, does not even bother to mention the old view that some amazingly are still teaching to this day...that the perfect refers to the completion of the canon: see the ESV Study Bible notes on 1 Corinthians as an example. The ESV Study Bible

His material should be read before one uses 1 Corinthians 13 in a wedding because it will help a good Pastor preach in a more practical way for a couple.

I say all of this, because sometimes if you are short of time you will be tempted to read just his summaries of a section. I recommend you try to slot enough time to read his exegetical comments in full because of what I have just chronicled on 1 Cor 13.

I wish he had a sub section for each part that gave pertinent links to ancient Jewish and Greek literature with focus on the Apocrypha, Pseudepigrapha, Apostolic Fathers, and 1 Century Jewish authors writing in Greek (like Josephus). I think it would be helpful to have more cross links to these categories. He does bring them into play, but it seems to be more judicious that I would prefer. It would also be interesting to see some material tying into the Hebrew Old Testament terms for love and how this ties in to 1 Corinthians as well as more LXX ties.

I found his treatment of 1 Corinthians 11 to be convincing, noting the difficulty of treating the 'head covering' issue, he lays out a full case for how to interpret that passage, including a simple, yet confirming chiastic outline to support his point. I think I agree with him on that as well. His handling of 1 Corinthians 15 helped me preach on the resurrection and is a worthy aid to any pastor who has to prepare a message for a funeral.

Because some of these passages are usually used in Weddings and Funerals, and I have used them over and over in Weddings and Funerals, I found it interesting to see how Garland contextualizes these passages. I think his links to Paul's purpose in writing remain consistent throughout the book. So you will regularly be reminded of why Paul wrote 1 Corinthians. On 1 Corinthians 13 Garland's comments are superior to Fee's because he correctly defines agape. Fee doesn't cite either of the massive works by Spicq (how can they be ignored?)...but does quote Shakespeare?! This is why it's good to have both commentaries if you can afford it.

One reviewer wrote that this commentary is superior to Fee's The First Epistle to the Corinthians (The New International Commentary on the New Testament) because of his treatment of 1 Corinthians 14:34. I don't know if I agree with that. I believe it's a worthy addition to ones library and that one should read Fee as well as Garland. I don't think I know enough to say which one is superior. I love both of these commentaries. I will say that I also prefer Thistleton's Shorter Commentary First Corinthians: A Shorter Exegetical and Pastoral Commentaryover his NIGTC The First Epistle to the Corinthians : A Commentary on the Greek Text, and I prefer Keener's short Socio commentary 1-2 Corinthians (New Cambridge Bible Commentary) over Witherington Conflict and Community in Corinth: A Socio-Rhetorical Commentary on 1 and 2 Corinthians because he consistently gets to the relevant issue at hand.

If you have $100 budgeted for 1 Corinthians, I recommend Fee & Garland. Then Thiselton's shorter commentary and Keener's shorter commentary. Of all of these I love Garland the best. But they are all excellent. When I am done reading a section by Garland on 1 Corinthians, I usually have the sense that I've just had an objective and helpful look at what scholars say, and what the text actually means, as well as some links for further study on key issues. I think that's likely how you will feel too if you purchase and use this book in your sermon prep time.

Quite Good
By Philip Bramblet
Garland's commentary is well-written and not difficult to read or understand. Scholarly enough, but very readable. Overall, it is well worth having. I would not, however, recommend its use alone. One should probably have both Fee and Garland, as they complement each other. In some areas, Fee is better; in other areas, Garland is better. My only disappointment was that in some sections, Garland cites a bunch of commentators and scholars but doesn't make his own view sufficiently clear. But on the whole, it is one of the two or three commentaries on 1 Corinthians pastors and Bible students should own.

The Pragmatic Translator: An Integral Theory of Translation (Bloomsbury Advances in Translation), by Massimiliano Morini

This book is concerned with translation theory. It proposes an all-round view of translation in the terms of modern pragmatics, as articulated in three pragmatic functions (performative, interpersonal and locative) which describe how translated texts function in the world, involve readers and are rooted in their spatio-temporal contexts. It presents a full and up to date view of translation that takes into account thirty years of research in the field of Descriptive Translation Studies. Unlike DTS, the theory provides an account of products and processes. This publication exhibits the need for and usefulness of such a theory, and will be essential reading for scholars involved in translation and interpreting studies.

Review
“Morini has accomplished a very difficult task: he explains difficult theoretical issues in extremely clear and lucid language, providing plenty of relevant microlinguistic examples in Italian and English. The theory developed in this book will help translation trainers not only to explain to their students that all translation is essentially manipulation, but also to set more or less clear limits on these manipulations and provide theoretical background for those limits. Thus, after reading this book, trainees as well as researchers will be less prone to fall back on old tricks and habits whenever they get in a situation that is not quite straightforward, as they will learn about the translation act and translation process rather than existing translations or interactions between translation and culture. The book is quite successful at gauging the unfortunate gap between translation theory and practice.” ―Elena Gheorghita, State University of Moldova, Linguist List, February 2014
