USE CAUTION: 2 different books listed in one listing.
By Adriana
I completely agree with other reviewers, that this book is a must have for every weaver, BUT ...

I was looking for the revised edition of this book. Amazon listing for revised edition offered 2 options: hardcover and paperback. As I clicked paperback it changed the edition without any warning and I ended up ordering the 2014 reprint (the one with red cover) of A Handweaver's Pattern Book, its original edition.

That is a totally different book. For comparison, 2014 reprint, or this (red) book only has 142 pages as opposed to 217 pages in the revised (green) version; entire chapters are missing in the red book and those chapters that match the ones in the green book, list fewer patterns. I didn't have time to count the total number of patterns in both editions, just by my estimate: red book has less then half of the patterns included in the green book. Even the format of the red book is very unpleasant: the figures, and drafts are much smaller than in the green edition, often times too uncomfortable to read.

Quite confusingly, Amazon decided to put both these books into the same listing, but they are entirely different books. I notified them of the fact, but they merely added the picture of 2014 paperback edition while still not changing the listing.

SUMMARY: If you are looking to purchase this handweaver's classic, stay clear of red cover 2014 edition and make sure you are ordering a revised edition, published in 1950 (the one with green cover).

Don't buy this edition. It is not the book you're looking for. Hard to read and the patterns/pages do' nt match. looks as though it's been hand copied, very small and vague to read. the green book book is the one you want.

Handweaver patterns
By Michele
I found out after receiving this and looking for a specific draft that this edition isn't the complete one. There is another edition with a green cover that is more complete and is actually the one I wanted. I have returned this. There isn't anything wrong with this edition other than not being as complete.

Needs Work
By Keri M. Peardon
I find this story and the characters compelling enough to keep reading--I think there is talent there--but Ms. Shapiro is still learning her craft... and it shows.

Parts of the book get bogged down in unnecessary detail; it makes her main character's life sound boring and mundane. Ms. Shapiro would be aided in her revisions by the thought that every sentence is precious and needs to either move the plot forward or develop the characters. Lengthy descriptions of a house or doctor's office are boring; a sentence or two is adequate. Pick out those things that your character would be most likely to notice, because what she finds interesting speaks to her character.

Also, Ms. Shapiro needs to read her dialogue aloud. If she did, she would notice that it doesn't flow naturally. Real people (including people in the Elizabethan period) speak in contractions; her dialogue is stilted and unnatural due to a lack of contractions. She also needs to use "she said" (or "mused," "replied," "asked," etc.) more often because it sometimes becomes confusing as to who is speaking.

But the major complaint are the errors. Ms. Shapiro would be well-advised to hire an editor before taking her next book to press. There are numerous typos, grammar mistakes (most notably the inability to maintain the correct tense, great lack of commas, and poor paragraph breaking), and historical errors.

For instance, the main historical character is the orphaned daughter of a master stone mason and the family is starting to fall on hard times. She ends up marrying a titled nobleman of wealth. This would have never happened in the Elizabethan period. Marriage was a business contract only and Constance had nothing valuable to offer. Love didn't count as a ware.

I could have believed the situation if she had been his mistress--certainly that could have been a love match--or if she had a high title but money issues, or he had money issues and she was a wealthy, but common, heiress. But as it stands in the book, the marriage would have never taken place. And even if it had, she would have become "Lady Carlise" or "Lady Constance," (depending on if Richard had taken his full title and inheritance yet) and would no longer have been referred to by her common title, "Mistress."

She would not have borrowed a fine dress and jewels to go to court; the wearing of diamonds by someone like her was against sumptuary laws, and to do so in the presence of the other nobles and the queen would have been very ugly. She could have been imprisoned for dressing above her station.

Chest of drawers did not yet exist in the Elizabethan period; people were still storing their clothes in chests.

Pippa would have never been wearing a high-waisted dress; I have never seen any evidence of such a style in the late Elizabethan period.

The pistol Richard would have used would have been a matchlock, which means he would have had to light the match and position it just so before he could fire it. He would not have stuck it through his belt to pull out and use whenever he wanted.

Writers who are interested in creating historical fiction are warned of this in advance by other authors: make sure your historical elements are correct. Be fastidious about it. People who like to read historical novels are well-versed in the history and customs of their preferred time period, and they absolutely will call you out on any mistakes. For my first historical novel, I went so far as to add historical notes at the end to detail where history ended and fiction began--and why I chose to deviate from history.

Beautifully Written Historical Novel With A Fascinating Twist
By Bonnie Jo Davis
I loved this book and can't wait to read everything else by the author. This story is about a modern woman with an inexplicable link to a mystery that took place in another century. Cassandra is an author who writes best selling novels and lives in London. One day she sees a news story on television about a house in Blackfriar's where the bones of a young woman and an unborn infant are discovered during a renovation project. Cassandra feels very real grief and immediately realizes she knows who the story behind the bones. She visits the house, purchases a few days later and moves in right away. This action takes her boyfriend, friends and family by surprise because Cass can be impulsive but she is not reckless. After moving into the house Cass begins to have visions of another time and records the story for her next novel. The book then alternates between Cass and a woman named Constance who lived during the reign of Elizabeth I. The story is well done and although there is some violence and six it is very tame compared to every other book I've read. The ending of the book leaves open the possibility of a sequel and I hope the author considers writing it. As they say in England "Well done, Irina, well done!"

Let's Play "Count the Historical Inaccuracies"!
By Sea Laughing
When I initially wrote my review, I hadn't quite finished the book--and wasn't sure I would--but upon reaching the end, I subtracted one star. To be honest, the only reason I finished this book was because the blatant historical inaccuracies made me laugh so hard!

Why do people with zero knowledge of history always think it's easy to write historical fiction? Irina Shapiro exhibits a meager talent for storytelling, but her work is curtailed by her ignorance of the period, as well as a serious lack of skill in composition.

This isn't the worst book I've ever read, but Shapiro should attend a few writing classes or read a couple of books about writing before publishing again. I'd describe her writing style as "limp, passive and repetitive." Overused adverbs abound, as well as bland descriptions constructed with passive verb tense, poorly written dialogue with a dearth of tags, and too much meaningless inner dialogue dragging the plot to a crawl.

I had a hearty laugh when Turner told Cassandra, "Your story is so cliché" because this entire book is the definition of 'cliché.' When Cassandra interviews the local historian and states, "I'm trying to find as much as I can...I like to be accurate," I actually shrieked with mirth. (By complete coincidence, the heroine manages to find the only historian in England who knows the life stories of an obscure local working class family from 500 years in the past, but he doesn't know that James I was PROTESTANT, not Catholic.)

***CONTAINS SPOILERS*** (Though if you have any sense, it won't matter because you won't waste your time reading this book.)

Shapiro's lack of research into Elizabethan England initially irritated me, until the mistakes became so outrageous that I couldn't stop laughing. There are so many anachronisms: Elizabethan characters uttering everything from Valspeak to quotes that wouldn't be coined for centuries to modern psychological terms, parlors furnished with sofa and armchairs, the hero traveling around London in a posh carriage and wearing "coats" with his doublets ('doublet' is the Elizabethan word for jacket), and a maidservant pregnant with a bastard who plans to surrender her baby for adoption! Shakespeare also makes a premature appearance. (Is it really that hard to look up Shakespeare?) Yet it's clear Shapiro did do some research, as the process of drawing and quartering is presented in elaborate detail, as is Mary Stewart's execution (which we're treated to even though Mary isn't a character and the event takes place 'offstage').

It's hard to summon any empathy for the flawless modern heroine. Cassandra is young, beautiful, talented, successful, rich, famous, lives in a ritzy flat, has the perfect relationship...yawn. Could there be a more boring protagonist? Even her breakup with her original boyfriend is perfect, since a better lover is eager to take his place.

Elizabethan heroine Constance faces more adversity, making her more interesting, though she's basically a Vanilla Heroine, all beauty and not much personality. For most of the book, she's referred to as 'Constance'; then Shapiro switches to 'Connie' without warning, and thereafter alternates between the two. Another peeve: most of the female characters have names beginning with "C": Cassandra, Constance, Camille, and Charlotte, which evidently confused even Shapiro since "Connie" ends up chopping salad in Camille's modern-day kitchen during Chapter 52.

Dialogue is sparse, mostly polite chit-chat which fails to drive the plot; Shapiro tells the reader about most conversations instead of showing them. She spins elaborate descriptions of minor details, such as walking up to the door and knocking, but love scenes and fights are summed up in a few brief words. One disturbing element: the love scenes are vague and glossed over with euphemisms, but the rape scene is described in sickening detail. (That scene was another reason I changed my rating from two stars to one.) Death scenes are also written with close attention to gruesome reality, a startling contrast to the cardboard characters and unconvincing plot.

Too much of the book is a rehash of what happened before. For example, Chapter 56 features Richard thinking about everything that happened in Chapter 55. Then Chapter 57 begins with a broadsheet (in laughable "mock-Olde English") that repeats the events of Chapter 55 again!

Shapiro doesn't understand that conflict is the basis of a good story, or that overcoming obstacles is essential to a romance. There's only token conflict when each couple meets but it's soon forgotten, and what little dramatic tension initially existed dissipates. The villain's motivation doesn't make sense, nor do the charges brought against Richard after he defends his wife. Cassandra-the-famous-writer frequently states that she moves her characters like puppets, requiring only a beginning and an ending because filling in the middle is easy; I get the feeling Shapiro is describing her own writing style, which probably explains why the characters lack realism and the plot is so implausible.

***END OF SPOILERS***

If you're ever stranded on a deserted island with no other reading material available, then I recommend you read "Precious Bones." Until then, there are better ways to spend your valuable time...unless you're looking for a good laugh, but even that isn't worth the price of this book. Watch "Blackadder II" instead.

International Political Economy: The Business of War and Peace, by James H. Nolt

This book offers a completely new and unique introduction to the economics of international relations. It treats all the traditional major themes of international relations theory while giving each a refreshing new twist with the incorporation of the influence of private power, particularly in the realm of war and peace. It reframes the history of the modern global economy and politics by thoroughly purging the myth of the market, a systematic blindness to private power. It not only draws on, but also illuminates major themes and empirical findings of comparative politics, business history, business strategy, business cycle theory, social evolutionary theory as well as the practical wisdom of traders and investors.

Part one introduces the major concepts of competing theories of international relations, emphasizing a unique approach, corporatism. Part two introduces the critical importance dynamic and oppositional analysis of issues. Part three traces the rise of the modern world from the mercantilist period until the rise of modern corporate organizations and the demise of imperialism in the crucible of World War I. Part four begins with the origins of the contemporary dominance of business internationalism before and during World War II, then analyzes three major facets of the postwar era: the unification of much of Europe, the industrialization of the Third World, and the Cold War and its aftermath. The final chapter considers the present and future of a fairly peaceful yet economically unstable world.

This book presents a refreshing and exciting portrayal of the global economy which challenges every major subject from money to markets to the business cycle. This book eschews the economics of dull averages to restore the drama of contending business forces, struggling for wealth and, in the process, influencing war and peace.

Review

In an attempt to reframe the history of the modern global economy, this interesting and erudite book by Nolt (senior fellow, World Policy Institute) critiques conventional literature of international relations through the lens of the author's theory of corporatist international relations. Nolt's theory stresses that international relations are more than the interplay among various nation states; rather, nations' international policies reflect, in part, the powerful influence of various interest groups. In contrast to this theory, the realist school of international relations interprets national policies as emerging because of the nation-state's understanding of its self-interest without acknowledging the role of national interest groups. Though the book does not offer a comprehensive understanding of the nature of international relations, readers should not fault the author; with so many parties influencing outcomes, outcomes remain elusive. What Nolt does do—and does very well—is show how various kinds of corporate interests (e.g., manufacturing or finance) influence countries' international policies over long swaths of time, beginning with the Peloponnesian War. The book ends with an interesting final discussion about the evolving instabilities of international political economy.

Brilliant, revisionist approach to political economy
By A reader
This is a highly innovative study of political economy, which challenges conventional thinking at several levels: Author James Nolt emphasizes systemic conflict between two major blocs of investors, as the key pivot of the political economy, the bulls and the bears – i.e. between sectors of the economy that favor economic growth (“bulls”), and those that favor austerity (“bears”). The very existence of bears as an organized faction of business will surprise many readers, who will assume that everyone favors growth. But Nolt stresses the often overlooked roles of corporate raiders, deflation oriented creditors, vulture funds, stock brokers engaging in “short” selling, and hedge funds profiting from bets against economic growth. Second, Nolt notes strategic action by investors, in ways that have little to do with impersonal market forces. He emphasizes that investors exhibit market power in every aspect of the investment process, from initial public offerings of stock, to purchasing of inputs, to hiring of workers, and to sales of products. He piquantly shows for example, that the low wages paid to workers in China has nothing to do with market forces and marginal productivity, and is instead the result of the workers' weak bargaining positions vis-à-vis multinational manufacturing firms. And finally, this book shows how conflicts between different investor groups can lead to conflicts between various political actors and even states, thus generating international political tensions.

This brilliant book presents a major challenge to traditional paradigms rooted in abstract and essentially apolitical approaches to the topic, which still dominate academia. Nolt's study is difficult to pin down ideologically, with challenges to laissez faire economics, as well as many left-wing critiques. This study will be invaluable for academic theorists of political economy, and also useful for graduate students and advanced undergraduates.

A paradigm-shifting work that is a crucial read to anyone working in political economy. As a professor in a Humanities department, I was engaged more with this text than with any recent economic work.

Compelling Analysis of Power, Money, and Politics
By Amazon Customer
Nolt presents politics and economics in its rawest form, that agued by Thucydides: "The powerful do what they will, the weak suffer what they must." Nolt returns the role of private power and business to economic and political thought. If you've ever wondered why the economic theories you learned in school or the so called "strategy of the firm" failed in predicting major economic, political, or business events, then you need to read this book.

Little do the Dark Angels know of the technological power available to the xenos, and the true scale of the threat they face. Didn't feel like a WAAAAGHHH!!!!
By Rhymoceros
Loved the prologue and epilogue, but that's about it. This book had a great intro, loved it, it was very different, took me by surprise and really opened up what the story had to offer. In the end however,it just didn't deliver. I hate to say it, but the whole story and characters were unimpressive and uneventful when comparing this story line as a tie in or extension to The War for Armageddon, including Helsreach. The plot of this book could pretty much be summarized by the title and the way this book was written became hard to read after a while, Since this is a Space Marine Battles, comparing this set up narrative with Rynn's World, for example, really left me lost. Each chapter was very long, each character not adding too much depth and complexity to the whole campaign. I love the way Rynn's World was set up by location, I thought that was fantastic, this book was set up by character, and the scenes just seemed too long and drawn out. This author mentioned 'decades' as long Space Marine service and 'hundreds' of orcs as a lot...where other books would have probably mentioned centuries and thousands of orcs.

This may have been better if the Space Marines were replaced with PDF or something other than Astartes, could have been more substantial. The Dark Angels showed no emotion, whenever a brother died, or when battling orcs, everything was very superficial. The Dark Angels are not really my favorite, and this book didn't help out, the one and only book I like with them in it is Eye of Terror, other than that, they've yet to stand out to me at all. Sorry Gav, this story lacked detail, twists, surprises and heart.

A refreshing addition to the Black Library
By M. Johnson
I have read much of the 40k material in reference to the Space Marines. From the Space Wolves to the Ultramarines you can always bet on there being praying, and death to those that oppose the Emperor's will. I as much as anyone, reads a Space Marine book for these very things. Where this book truly stands out is that it portrays how a Space Marine company fights as a unit. It displays how the elements of recon, medical, and assault truly work during the chaos of war. It gives you a clear idea of how a Commander of such an element must make decisions in order to prosecute a campaign of this level.

As I have said before I've read several of these novels, but this is the first one that attempts to move 40k from futuristic Sci Fi fantasy to strong military Sci Fi. Don't misunderstand if you read a Space Marines novel for the praying, and killing it is here. What it adds is the tactical aspect of how they fight, maneuver, and plan. The action is spot on and very grim, as it should be. Instead of portraying the Space Marines as unstoppable juggernauts on the battlefield it shows their thought process before, during, and after the battle. It even portrays elements of doubt that they experience. Outside of the Horus Heresy books this is rare within much of the 40k material.

I think that Mc Neill and Abnett our still probably the best authors of the Black Library. Thorpe does create a very real and grim portrayal of war from the Marines standpoint. I don't think it fair to compare what Thorpe has done here with either writer. The only comparison that comes to mind is Eric Nylund's Halo books. Which shows the tactics, techniques, and sacrifices' that even the most supreme warriors must make to prosecute a war. I highly recommend this book to any 40k fan it's just different enough to be refreshing but maintains what the Space Marines are about at their core. I would also recommend it to any Military Sci Fi fan as well. It takes what exist in the 40k universe and applies it to the military structure that exists now. Instead of one hero doing it all it shows a company of warriors doing what they can to contribute. Great book and I can't wait to see if Thorpe will write another book applying these ideas.

Bookworm Speaks!- The Purging of Kadillus

The Purging of Kadillus

by Gav Thorpe

****

The Story: The Dark Angels battle the might of an ork Waaaagh!, led by the feared warboss Ghazghkull Thraka. Faced with an ork invasion of Piscina IV, the 3rd Company of the Dark Angels believes the threat to be minimal. As enemy numbers continue to increase, their commander, Captain Belial, insists that his Company are strong enough to resist. But Scout-Sergeant Naaman knows just how dangerous this foe can be, and when a renewed greenskin offensive takes the Dark Angels by surprise, the orks swarm towards Kadillus Harbour. Little do the Dark Angels know of the technological power available to the xenos, and the true scale of the threat they face. Belial, Naaman and their fellow Astartes fight a desperate siege at Kadillus, knowing that they must hold out until Imperial reinforcements arrive or the planet will be lost.

The Good: The Dark Angels are a very fascinating chapter of the Adeptus Astartes and it is quite nice to be able to see them march to war and move away from the persistent plot of hunting the fallen members of their brethren. It is important to give depth to any faction and/or characters in order to make it more than just a one-hat factor. This book always the audience to experience another facet of the Dark Angels, one where they are doing what Adeptus Astartes do best: Making battle and war.

Something that is really cool is the inclusion of the local army as characters. A favorite event in these books is when the Adeptus Astartes interact with ordinary humans. It serves two purposes: the first is that it illustrates the extent of the differences between the Astartes and the human forces. Astartes are so strong and the humans seem so frail. The second reason is that serves to show how similar they still are to ordinary humans. Astartes are not perfect and sometimes they forget that and they look down upon the multitudes of ordinary humans, but occasionally they are reminded of the courage of humanity and this book shows us that every now and then.

One of the best parts of the whole book is the beginning and the ending. Without giving too much away, it is here that we see the face of the enemy, Ghazghkull Thraka himself. Normally, prologues and epilogues are a hit and miss. Either they are useful towards the plot or they are a waste of time. Some authors advise to cut those parts out during editing. Anyway, we see the extent of Ghazghkull’s abilities compared to lesser Ork and for those who are unfamiliar, we see why he is one of the greatest foes ever faced by the Imperium of Man.

It makes Bookworm eager to read more about him.

The Flaws: This one was a bit of dud compared to classics of the Space Marine Battles series such as Rynn’s World or Death of Integrity. It is hard for Bookworm to pin down the exact factor that led to his lack of appreciation. There are several things to take into account…

The Dark Angels themselves lends to the book’s flaws. This chapter is known for its dour character and that does not lead to an interesting story. Character is half the battle when writing any work of fiction and the Dark Angels lack a lot of it. The only at times to differentiate one Space Marine from the other was by their name and rank and nothing else. There are one or two tender moments but they are overshadowed by the rest of the story, which is lacking or simply lost among all the generic action scenes.

Orks are a favorite enemy of Bookworm but they felt underutilized in this volume. After reading several books that feature Ork onslaughts known as a WAAAGH!, the Orks in this book did not feel like part of a WAAAGH! Ork onslaughts are supposed overwhelming things, like tidal waves of violence sweeping over the land and whatever defenders were there. Mountains of crude machines to be rendered into scraps and fire by bolt shell and las fire. The orks are more a like a storm than an army. In this book, the orks were an army and it felt…lacking compared to the all but unstoppable forces of other tales of the Black Library.

The ultimate problem is that the whole volume is too formulaic. The Space Marines are just that: Space Marines (tm) and nothing else, no certain quirk of their biology like the Blood Angels or the Space Wolves. No memorable characters to spice up the squads and only fleeting moments that prove they are still human. They are simply generic Adeptus Astartes and they lack significant character development. They fight the orks, alongside the local planetary defense force and the orks put up a good fight but nothing exceeding what most of the Dark Angels can handle. There is small twist about the orks near the end that serves as a climax for a preceding mystery about them but even then it lacks gravity.

Even the trademark illustration in the center of the book is lacking. Very generic and quite probably from some older codex (game manual).

Final Verdict: If you are a fan of the sons of the Lion, this book is worth checking out but don’t get your hopes up for something extraordinary.

The Trumpet (Yale Musical Instrument Series), by John Wallace, Alexander McGrattan

In the first major book devoted to the trumpet in more than two decades, John Wallace and Alexander McGrattan trace the surprising evolution and colorful performance history of one of the world's oldest instruments. They chart the introduction of the trumpet and its family into art music, and its rise to prominence as a solo instrument, from the Baroque "golden age," through the advent of valved brass instruments in the nineteenth century, and the trumpet's renaissance in the jazz age. The authors offer abundant insights into the trumpet's repertoire, with detailed analyses of works by Haydn, Handel, and Bach, and fresh material on the importance of jazz and influential jazz trumpeters for the reemergence of the trumpet as a solo instrument in classical music today.

Wallace and McGrattan draw on deep research, lifetimes of experience in performing and teaching the trumpet in its various forms, and numerous interviews to illuminate the trumpet's history, music, and players. Copiously illustrated with photographs, facsimiles, and music examples throughout, The Trumpet will enlighten and fascinate all performers and enthusiasts.

Informative but biased

Provides a remarkable overview of all important trumpet topics and includes complete analysis of important works. Some reporting is done with considerable bias (the authors are trumpeters) including a suspect appendix of important 20th century works that includes far more than a fair share of the author's own commissions.

Beautiful! I'm impressed with its professional, substantive appearance. It will be a classic of Middle Eastern Dance literature. -- Monique Monet, dancer and artist

Like does not even begin to describe how I feel about your book. Definitely worth its weight in spiked bracelets! -- Carrie Hiebert of Ice Cube Imports

Wonderful Introduction to Tibal Bellydance
By Stephanie M. Markley
I love this book! I have been taking classes for about a year in Cabaret bellydance and was curious about Tribal style. I bought this book and I am hooked! It is full of fascinating info, including costume and basic movements. I would still recommend taking classes and maybe purchasing tapes or DVD's as I do not believe you can learn it all from a book, but this book has it all:)
Thank you Kajira Djoumahna for a wonderful book. Check out Carolena Nericcio's websight for "Fat Chance Bellydance" and the authors web sight for "Blacksheep Bellydance" and belly dance superstar Rachel Brice's "The Indigo"

Outdated but still enjoyable
By AJ R.
This book is over 10 years old, so while it's a good source for finding out about the roots of tribal belly dance, some of the suggestions for music and costuming may feel a little dated. I also wish this book relied a little less on quotes and opinions, as a lot of them are just that, one dancer's opinion that may not really reflect the reality of the dance, especially not 10-12 years down the road.

Of course, it is entertaining to see dancers quoted as saying things that are nearly the opposite of what they say and do now.

One thing I really appreciate is that Kajira includes a really strongly-worded chapter on how the belly dance community, ESPECIALLY the tribal community, abuses and misuses the word "g*psy." Unfortunately, despite the efforts of the author and many like-minded dancers, this problem continues to this day in all corners of the community.

Now that this is available in an affordable digital edition instead of expensive second-hand hard copies, it's definitely good to pick up and have around as a reference.

Great one of a kind book!
By BellyAndWings
From exploring the roots of tribal to giving credit to the upcoming pioneers, this is a fantastic tome. I have met several of the people in the book, and they are all absolutely lovely, and all had praise for their experience with the book's creation. From basic moves to types of music, makeup and anecdotes, this book truly covers tribal in a well informed, factual manner, without apparent bias. It is also full of photographs--my only wish is future editions have color photos of these gorgeous costumes. I also have to say this book is full of giving credit where credit is due, which is a great thing to see!

The 100 Greatest Advertisements 1852-1958: Who Wrote Them and What They Did, by Julian Watkins

Styles in advertising will change, but there is no copywriter, artist, or campaign planner who will not profit by studying proved successes, whether of 50 years ago or today. In this single volume are 100 of what are probably among the most successful advertisements ever to appear in print, plus an additiional 13 added especially for this edition.
These 113 ads are proven salesmen―almost every one had phenomenal results. They have not been included because of personal whim, or for their beauty. The ultimate criterion here is the only one that really counts: whether an ad did what it was supposed to do. These ads helped change the habits of a nation, built reputations, gave new expressions to the language and―first and foremost―sold millions of dollars of merchandise, from Rolls Royce automobiles to Lux Soap, from Riviera Pears to Steinway Pianos.
You learn the salient facts behind these ads as well, often expressed in the words of the originator himself. Men who understood intuitively the workings of mass persuasion techniques long before they became widespread describe their own thoughts, reasonings, and hunches. Earnest Elmo Calkins tells about his experiences in creating Phoebe Snow for the Lackawanna Railroad. Bruce Barton tells about his work on the "Five Foot Shelf" ad, which increased eight-fold the number of coupons received. David Ogilvy describes his campaigns for Hathaway Shirts and Rolls Royce. Raymond Rubicam tells of Squibb's "Priceless Ingredient."More than 100 ads tell better than any textbook or professional analysis exactly what is the secret ingredient that makes an ad "click" when a thousand others fail.

Learn From Some of the Greatest Copywriters
By Robert L. Choat
While some of the ads in "The 100 Greatest Advertisements" may seem outdated - there are many others that one can learn from. Copywriters such as - Claude Hopkins, John Caples, Raymond Rubicam, David Ogilvy, and many others - have shown that most of the great ads were written back then. Some people may believe that today's advertisements are better then they were back then. Not so. Direct response copywriters know that yesterday's copywriters are the one's to learn from. As a former ad agency owner and master copywriter - I keep these ads as part of my "swipe file." So can you.

A customer comment
By Modeland
"A customer" calls this thoughtful collection by Watkins "outdated" and of no value to a modern, savvy, cutting edge, tip of the iceberg, with-it, etc, etc, advertising wannabe, regardless of age, shape or fuel. And, that is the essence of what is wrong with what is being produced as advertising copy writers, producers, et. al. today. All huff, no puff.

(Yes, I were one)

Great swipe book for advertisers
By Amazon Customer
This book contains ads written by some of the best marketing minds of all time, such as Hopkins, Ogilvy, Caples, and others. While the ads are old, the copywriting is stellar and timeless. This book also contains the stories behind each ad and how they did commercially, which are a fun read if you're into advertising.

This is a great book for swiping ideas and/or copy, or finding inspiration for new ads. I highly recommend it.
